We know that we’ve come to Colorado during the coldest time of the year, but for the last couple of weekends we were itching to go hiking with the dogs. It didn’t work out because it was either too cold or too windy. This weekend was our chance with temps in the 60’s and practically no wind.
We are staying in Golden right now and have been eyeing an open space park close to us off of HWY 93 called North Table Mountain Park. We woke up early Saturday morning packed up the dogs and were off to the park. What a wonderful hike. Quite steep inclines, but luckily the little wiener dogs helped pull us up. The overlook of Golden was simply beautiful. We only carried two bottles of water, one for us and one for the dogs, so when the water supply was running short, we headed back for the Jeep. We ended up walking about two or so miles before we made our way home. You would think the dogs would have been tired, but after a little nap, they were ready to go for another walk. Before dark we ended up walking another two miles in the open space behind the RV park.
Today, we wanted to take advantage of the nice weather again before the work week started, so we ended up at North Table Mountain Park again. This time we came a bit more prepared and packed a backpack full of water and snacks. I never thought I’d ever get a fanny pack, but I ended up buying one that has places for two water bottles. I tied a carabiner on each side so that I could attach the dogs’ leashes. This way I don’t have to worry about hanging onto the leash and they are pretty easy to handle. The fanny pack is nicely padded and is much more comfortable to wear than tying the leashes around my waist. Besides it held quite a few snacks for the wieners, so they were appreciative. Robert attached Tucker’s leash to his backpack, so he also had his hand free.
Because of our wieners’ little legs, we took several breaks but they did a fantastic job of hiking another six miles today. When we rested too long, they began to whine like they were getting impatient with us and wanted to keep going. We took different trails and admired a beautiful overlook of Denver and even saw a herd of about 20+ deer. It was so peaceful on the trail. Even though there were several people out either biking, jogging, or hiking, most of the time we felt pretty secluded.
The hike is what we all needed to get our hearts a pumping. We will be having at least a week of great weather, and with the time change, we are planning more hikes after work every chance we can get.
