Don’t forget your camera when you come to the US Space & Rocket Center in Hunsville, AL. There are plenty of things to take pictures of and we were surprised how big and how many buildings the grounds actually had. You’d see things like The Saturn V Rocket restored, the charred Apollo 16 Command Module, a rock brought back from the moon, and that is just the beginning. These items were located in the Davidson Center for Space Exploration where the 476′ long, 90′ wide, and 63′ high Saturn V Rocket was suspended 10′ above the floor.
2012 marks the 30th Anniversary of Space Camp which was founded by the US Space and Rocket Center in 1982 by the museum’s educational program to help promote the study of math, science, and technology. More than 500,000 students and adults have attended the Space Camp Program since 1982. Graduates from the camp have included four astronauts and one cosmonaut in the last 30 years.
The only thing that you weren’t allowed to photograph was the temporary attraction, Mammoths and Mastodons: Titans of the Ice Age. The exhibit had some life-sized models, fossil tusks, and skulls on display. There were several videos throughout the exhibit explaining the history and theories of mammoths and mastodons.
All in all, we spent five hours there and could have easily spent several more.
