Work took us to the Decatur, Alabama area this spring. We needed to stay about eight weeks and we sought a place that was resonably priced monthly rates and in a nice location. We came across Swan Creek Community, just north of Decatur on Hwy 31 in a small town called Tanner.
We were greeted by friendly folks who drove us around the 120+ acre grounds to pick out a site. Swan Creek is a mobile home community that has short and long-term RV spaces. The long-term sites are as large as a mobile home spot. We have been so used to RV spots in Florida and Colorado, it was refreshing to has such a large lot. Many travelers work at the local power plant and maintain their long-term spot during their stint in the area.
The grounds were well kept, but the locals were saddened by the state of their trees. The park was hit hard with the rash of tornados of 2011, destroying many of their shade trees. The damage of the storms led to new buildings for the club house, laundry, exercise room, pump house and tornado shelter.
We loved the area as our site was well off the road and overall very quiet. Once in a while we would hear trains in the distance and the occasional traffic. The park is very pet friendly. We loved taking the dogs for long walks all around the park.The park does offer WiFi, however, our site was out of range so we couldn’t take advantage of the service.There is no dump station, however, all sites have full hook-ups. No on-site propane refills, but it did appear that a local propane service came out and filled 100 gallon+ tanks for long-term residences. The monthly rate was $325.50, where $75 of that fee was applied towards electric. If the electric bill ran over $75, they simply handed out a bill for the difference.
We were pleased that a local RV repair shop, Andy’s RV, made house calls. Our refrigerator went out and he was able to get the part and come out and fix it.
