As we were passing through Thayer, MO we saw the sign for Grand Gulf State Park. We’ve driven through Thayer many times but we’ve never taken the time to slow down and take a look. Today was the day for an impromptu side trip.
Just 6 miles off of Hwy 63 on Hwy W, we were in for a pleasant surprise. We drove until the pavement ended at the State Park. We got out to take a look around. What we found out was Grand Gulf is referred to as Missouri’s “Little Grand Canyon.”
The 130 feet high canyon walls and natural bridge made for an amazing little hike. Not to mention the trails are well maintained. There are many boardwalks and overlooks to easily and safely take in the view.
We learned that there is also a cave. Up until the 1920s it was explored and accessible. At that time a severe storm blocked the entrance with trees and other debris filling the cave. When rains are heavy, the gulf fills with over 100 feet of water which drains slowly toward Mammoth Spring.
After our little peaceful hike, we decided to take the dirt roads to Koshkonong and picked up our route on Hwy 63. If you are in the Thayer, MO area, Grand Gulf State Park is a must see.
