We left Alabama and made our way to Florida. We ended up stopping at Cedar Key for the night. When we used to live in St. Petersburg, we had made a couple of day trips to Cedar Key, but they were certainly quick. We like the area and wanted to spend the night and walk around the town more. So even though we were only about two hours from our final destination, we decided to stop. We figured it was good timing, besides Robert was exhausted.
We wanted to stay at Low Key Hideaway and meet up with Pat and Cindy Bonish whose blog we follow (EveryMilesAMemory.com). It turned out they happened to be on the road and there was no vacancy. We’ll have to catch up to them another time.
We ended up staying at Sunset Isle RV Park. Friendly people, wonderful ribs, and onion rings awaited us at their cafe. After resting awhile, Robert wanted to head out to take some pictures. We ended up at Cemetery Point Park. A nice trail, partially on boardwalk through the mangrove trees. We should have checked Weather Bug before we headed out because it started to rain. Luckily we got to the pavillion at the end of the trail before the down pour started. We were just stuck there. It was nice sitting there on a picnic table, grateful to just slow down, relax and watch the rain. It was so peaceful and it certainly cooled things down a great deal.
After about twenty minutes of hard rain, it finally let up, then stopped. We sat there for a minute and then it appeared the ground was moving when all the little crabs surfaced. They were certainly funny to watch. We headed back to the Jeep and the birds started coming out for their evening meal. I was so delighted to see a flock of about nine Rosetta Spoonbills. Those are my favorite, probably because I don’t see them as often and they are pink.
We had the chance to explore town and have a nice, relaxing time. If you like to do a lot of shopping and like the hustle and bustle of the city, then Cedar Key is NOT the place for you. But if you are like we are and a quiet, laid back small town is more your style, then this little oyster farming community is the must visit place for you.
