We were quite proud of ourselves with yesterday’s post. It was done completely on our phone right there at the Alabama Jubilee. We may be a little behind on technology, but we love it and have fun discovering more.
We are in the Decatur, AL area for the next several weeks. We heard that Memorial Day Weekend marks Decatur’s annual Alabama Jubilee at Point Mallard Park. It is a free event that features hot air balloons, tractor show, craft fair, and car show. We were excited to go and friends in the area said that we better show up early because the traffic would be horrible. The balloon races were to start at around 6 a.m., so we woke up at a ridiculously early hour and got there by 5 a.m.
Traffic at that time was pretty much non-existent. We were glad we were there at that time anyway because the light fog at Point Mallard made everything so beautiful at dawn. The balloon races were supposed to start at 6 a.m. but was cancelled. From what we could gather, there wasn’t any wind to take them where they needed to go. They did air up the balloons and some teams went ahead and provided tethered rides. The colorful balloons were such a beautiful sight.
We made our way to the craft show. There were several booths with great stuff. I refrained from buying, because living in the small spaces of an RV has changed my buying habits. I try not to accumulate anything that I cannot use. The tractor show was small, but nice. We enjoyed the tractor parade and Robert is always fascinated looking at the running hit and miss engines.
The car show was bigger than what we thought it would be. We always enjoy looking at old cars. The heat was getting to us and we were exhausted from getting up so early. We decided to go ahead and go home by 1 p.m. to take a nap in the nice, cool RV.
That was perhaps the best nap, ever!!! We didn’t want to miss the balloon glow at dusk, so we hopped back in the Jeep and headed back to Point Mallard by about 5 p.m. The traffic was much more congested to say the least. With a bit of patience, we did find a pretty good parking spot on the side of the road, close to the action.
Going back was so worth it. We sat back and watched the balloons do their tethered rides and by 9 p.m. they were glowing. We are so glad we didn’t miss it.
