“I thought it would be bigger,” is what we thought when we first laid eyes on Niagara Falls. We were close to the area as we made our way to Chicago to see family, so we thought we’d stay a couple of nights near the falls and explore a bit. We pulled into the campground late in the afternoon. Once all set up, we headed off to see the falls at sunset. I don’t know what we expected, but it wasn’t what we imagined. I guess they omit all the people and the tourist traps on TV specials about Niagara Falls.
Even though we thought we’d seen enough that evening, we went back the next day to see if we had missed anything. Although there were so many offers for tours of the falls, we decided to forego them and trek out on our own. We are glad we did. Besides the $10 all day parking, we only spent $2 to take some pictures on the observation deck. We weren’t interested in taking the boat or walking the trail right up to the falls and get soaking wet, so that saved some bucks.
We arrived early in the morning before it got crowded and were able to take some great pics. The sun was hitting the mist of the falls just right to create some beautiful rainbows. We spent about eight hours taking our time and walking around the falls. Even though it wasn’t what we imagined, we did end up having a nice time. I guess it was a shock to our systems to be around such a populated region since we had been staying in remote areas for the past several weeks. <Click here for more photos of the falls.>
